SENATOR SMITH: Where did you enter the lifeboat?
MRS. WHITE: I entered the lifeboat from the top deck, where the boats were. We had to enter the boat there. There was no other deck to the steamer except the top deck. It was a perfect rat trap. There was no other deck that was open, at all.
SENATOR SMITH: Do you recollect what boat you entered?
MRS. WHITE: Boat 8, the second boat off.
SENATOR SMITH: On which side of the ship?
MRS. WHITE: I could not tell you. It was the side going this way—the left side, as we were going.
SENATOR SMITH: That would be the port side?
MRS. WHITE: Yes. I got in the second boat that was lowered.
SENATOR SMITH: What officer stood there?
MRS. WHITE: I could not tell you that; I have no idea.
SENATOR SMITH: What officer supervised this work?
MRS. WHITE: I have no idea. I could not even tell whether it was an officer or the captain. I know we were told to get into the boat.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you have any difficulty in getting into the boat?
MRS. WHITE: None whatever. They handled me very carefully, because I could hardly step. They lifted me in very carefully and very nicely.
SENATOR SMITH: How far out from the side of the ship did the lifeboat hang? Were you able to step into it?
MRS. WHITE: Oh, yes.
SENATOR SMITH: Or were you passed into it?
MRS. WHITE: No; we stepped into it. It did not hang far out.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you see how far out it was?
MRS. WHITE: No, sir; I have no idea. We got into it very easily. We got into the lifeboat without any inconvenience whatever. As I said, my condition was such that I had to be handled rather carefully, and there was no inconvenience at all.
SENATOR SMITH: Did you see anything after the accident bearing upon the discipline of the officers or crew, or their conduct, which you desire to speak of?
MRS. WHITE: Yes; lots about them.
SENATOR SMITH: Tell me about that.

MME WHITE : Je ne pourrais pas vous le dire. C’était le côté qui allait dans cette direction — le côté gauche, comme nous le faisions.

MME WHITE : Oui. Je suis montée dans le deuxième canot qui a été abaissé.

ME WHITE : Je n’en ai aucune idée. Je ne pouvais même pas dire si c’était un officier ou le capitaine. Je sais qu’on nous a dit de monter dans le canot.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous eu de la difficulté à monter dans le canot?
MRS. WHITE : Pas du tout. Ils m’ont traité avec beaucoup de soin, parce que je pouvais à peine marcher. Ils m’ont soulevé très soigneusement et très gentiment.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : À quelle distance du côté du navire l’embarcation de sauvetage a-t-elle été suspendue? Avez-vous été en mesure d’intervenir?
MRS. WHITE : Oh, oui.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Ou avez-vous été pris en charge?
MRS. WHITE : Non, nous sommes montés. Ça n’était pas loin.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu à quelle distance?
MRS. WHITE : Non, monsieur; je n’en ai aucune idée. Nous nous sommes lancés très facilement dans l’aventure. Nous sommes montés dans l’embarcation de sauvetage sans aucun inconvénient. Comme je l’ai dit, mon état était tel que je devais être traitée avec soin, et il n’y avait aucun inconvénient.
